What Is the Fraction Calculator?

A fraction calculator performs arithmetic operations on two fractions and returns the result in its simplest form. It finds a common denominator for addition and subtraction, multiplies numerators and denominators directly for multiplication, and inverts the second fraction for division. The result is then reduced using the greatest common divisor (GCD).

How to Use the Fraction Calculator

  1. Enter the numerator and denominator of the first fraction.
  2. Select the operation (+, −, ×, ÷).
  3. Enter the numerator and denominator of the second fraction.
  4. Click Calculate to see the simplified result.

Formula

Addition: a/b + c/d = (ad + bc) / bd Subtraction: a/b − c/d = (ad − bc) / bd Multiplication: a/b × c/d = ac / bd Division: a/b ÷ c/d = ad / bc All results simplified by dividing by GCD(numerator, denominator)

Worked Example

1/2 + 1/3 = (1×3 + 1×2) / (2×3) = 5/6 ≈ 0.833333
3/4 × 2/5 = 6/20 = 3/10 = 0.3

Understanding Your Result

A simplified fraction has no common factors between numerator and denominator other than 1. If the denominator is 1, the result is a whole number. A negative denominator is moved to the numerator for clarity.

Common Mistakes

  • Entering 0 as a denominator — fractions with a zero denominator are undefined.
  • Confusing mixed numbers with improper fractions — convert mixed numbers (e.g. 1½ = 3/2) before entering.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I enter a mixed number?

Convert it to an improper fraction first. For example, 2¾ = (2×4+3)/4 = 11/4. Enter 11 as the numerator and 4 as the denominator.

What if the result is a whole number?

The calculator will show the result with a denominator of 1, for example 6/1. The decimal equivalent will be a whole number.

Can I enter negative fractions?

Yes. Enter a negative numerator (e.g. −3 and 4 for −3/4). Negative denominators are automatically moved to the numerator.
