What Is the Travel Time Calculator?

A travel time calculator computes the duration of a journey based on the distance and the average speed. It is useful for planning road trips, estimating arrival times and comparing routes. The result is shown in hours, minutes and seconds.

How to Use the Travel Time Calculator

  1. Enter the distance.
  2. Select the distance unit (km or miles).
  3. Enter your average speed in km/h.
  4. Click Calculate.

Formula

Time = Distance ÷ Speed Where: Distance in km (miles converted to km first) Speed in km/h Time in hours → converted to h, min, sec

Worked Example

Distance: 350 km, Speed: 100 km/h
Time: 350 ÷ 100 = 3.5 hours = 3 hours 30 minutes

Understanding Your Result

Use your average speed, not your maximum speed. Average speed accounts for stops, traffic, speed limits and acceleration. For highway driving, 90–100 km/h is a reasonable average. For city driving, 40–60 km/h is more realistic.

Common Mistakes

  • Using maximum speed instead of average speed — always use average speed for realistic estimates.
  • Not accounting for rest stops, fuel stops and traffic delays.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to drive 500 km at 100 km/h?

500 ÷ 100 = 5 hours. Add time for fuel stops and rest breaks for a realistic total journey time.

Can I use this for cycling or walking?

Yes. Enter the distance and your average cycling or walking speed. Average walking speed is about 5 km/h; cycling varies from 15–30 km/h.
